QCHAT – Paper Handling Quality Effort

Structure and Membership:

The QCHAT – Paper initiative membership includes the following organizations:

  • BalTerm
  • UPM-Kymmene
  • M-Real
  • ILA – Local 1429
  • Maryland Port Administration

Background:

  • In May of 2002, the QCHAT Paper initiative was launched (BalTerm, M-Real, UPM-Kymmene & MPA)
     
  • 3-Phase approach proposed initially

Phase I – vessel to warehouse

(covered quality-related issues regarding vessel discharge and paper handling)

Phase II – movement within warehouse

Phase III – warehouse to truck/rail
 

  • Combined Phase II & III
     
  • Steering Committee formed in late 2004 to guide QCHAT -Paper initiative
     
  • Work Group established in February 2005 to address 10 goal areas related to the order fulfillment & inventory management processes
     
  • Quarterly meetings established to monitor progress and take appropriate action for continued improvement

Phase I – Quality Results:

  • Development & utilization of quality assessment
  • On-going education/training provided
  • Development of comprehensive training video covering all aspects of initial cargo handling from vessel to first point of rest
  • Initial reduction in overall damage of more than 50%

Phase II & III Quality Results:

  • Developed comprehensive process map
  • Reviewed current measures
  • Highlighted new measure
  • Developed new collaborative procedures & processes

Attained initial performance improvement results in order fulfillment and inventory management processes
